In 2017 Oregon experienced some of the worst local forest fires in history, torching an estimated 400,000 acres of forests across the state. Locally in Bend we watched the Mt Jefferson and Milli Fires rage while the Nash Complex Fire threatened our iconic Elk Lake Lodge. These fast moving and destructive fires have been successfully extinguished thanks to the support of air tankers, helicopters, and an army of ground teams who battled for three months to hold containment lines.
Now is your chance to explore Central Oregon’s incredible fire scarred forest at sunset when our mountains explode into the golden hues and bright sunset rays that make for legendary end of day flights.
Bend “Fire Sky” Sunsets
Each year from September through late March the sun sets lower over the Cascade Range, and for Bend residents and visitors alike the sunsets these late fall afternoons bring fill the sky with golden pink hues and candy floss atmospherics over the Cascade Range that are best experienced from the air.
The Cascades are a unique part of the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire, the ring of volcanoes and associated mountains around the Pacific Ocean. In fact all of the eruptions in the contiguous United States over the last 200 years have been from Cascade volcanoes. While catching the perfect sunset is our focus on this scenic helicopter tour, we’ll also highlight the Three Sisters, Broken Top, and a wide variety of volcanic mountain terrain bathed with slanting rays of golden sun.
